ADHD, in the past called ADD, stands for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  There is no single symptom, exam finding or test result, that confirms it.  Rather, by ruling out other conditions, and after a careful and full exam, a diagnosis of ADHD can be made.

• There are three main clusters of symptoms: Inattention, or Hyperactivity Impulsivity, or a combination of the two.
• Diagnosis is made if you have 5 or more of the symptoms for over 6 months,  and negatively impacts social,  school, or work activities. 
• These symptoms  were present before age 12. 
• Symptoms are present in more than one setting (home, school,  work, or with friends or relatives) 
• Symptoms are not attributed to  psychotic disorder, mood disorder, anxiety, dissociative disorder, personality disorder, or substance abuse.

• Makes careless mistakes/lacks attention to detail
• Difficulty paying attention
• Does not listen when spoken to
• Fails to follow through on tasks and instructions
• Disorganized
• Avoids/dislikes tasks requiring  mental effort
• Loses things 
• Easily distracted 
• Is forgetful in daily activities
